Winter Solstice

Participate in sacred rites and rituals that are thousands of years old

It was believed that Incas were descendants of the sun, therefore Inti Raymi, the feast of the sun, was the biggest, most important, and spectacular, festival in the Incan calendar. It was performed every year on June 21, the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.

Today the festival is held as it was in ancient times, on the morning of the winter solstice. Reenacted in the Saqsayhuaman fortress, the event, which attracts vast crowds that fill the hillsides and terraces surrounding the natural amphitheater, portrays the religious portion of the ancient nine-day festival.
